Hanging Has Taken Place

Photos for the exhibit at the Carnegie Center should be up now, waiting for the lights to be adjusted and the labels applied. Not my responsibility. Whew! Hanging a show is hard work--it will be fun to see how the gallery director chooses to do it.

I looked over some of the notes taken along our travels and there are many stories and much history to share at our Saturday talk so I won't need to make anything up.

Reading over them, I thought "What an excellent adventure that mother and daughter had--sprinkled in with a few friends. I wish I had done that."

Then I reminded myself that was us!

Bounty of Bikers

The Horsey 100 Weekend:

The streets were filled with flashy helmets, bright shirts and buff butts as bikers wheeled by on the way to back roads for the Horsey 100. They come from all over; it's a relatively challenging ride for serious riders through beautiful bluegrass horse farms.

I asked Everett, the friendly sage who sits outside Favas, greeting and waving at passerbys, while his girlfriend waits tables, why he wasn't partaking in the ride.

He remarked, "My bike has a flat tire," and settled back for another cigarette. Did I mention that most of the riders are from out-of-town?

Poster, Child

Distributed remaining invites and put a few posters in businesses for 20/20 Vision. This weekend is the Horsey 100 where a predicted 2000 bikers come to town to ride around the beautiful Bluegrass country. None from Chicago this year, unfortunately. It's always fun to have them come up for beer afterwards at raja's rooftop salon.

Movin' em Down the Road

Delivered all photos to the Carnegie Center in New Albany, IN today and met with the people there. They will be fun to work with--and good news! A Brewery is just across the street to party after the opening.

The banner for our exhibit is now hanging outside the entrance:

The previous show is down and the gallery is being painted. Below is one of the two facing spaces where the exhibit will be and the center desk when one enters the gallery. The space above the desk will be used for the jazz group, playing at the opening.

Hmm. Doesn't take much to get me enthused. Next stop? The Library of Congress.

Right.

Going to the Dogs

The entertainment for the weekend was The Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival. Sounds boring? It was not. The International Finals Sheep Herding Competition was held on a huge hilly park grounds where Border Collies from all over competed in herding sheep. Sunday was the Double-Lift competition for the 20 finalists, where the dog had to locate a group of 10 hidden sheep over a hill, move them down, find another group of 10 hidden elsewhere, herd them all together, passing them though gates and collecting all 20 in front of us. The next task was to separate those that had orange bands around their neck from the others.

The dogs responded to the owner's whistles for direction and were totally focused on the job at hand; you could almost see their minds working. They were good, almost "make you cry" good.

"Star" a top competitor ponders how to separate those with orange neckbands from the others. His owner, Alasdair  MacRae is one of the top trainers in the country, having moved to Missouri from Scotland:

And Away They Go?

Tomorrow the Rapture is scheduled--or predicted--or whatever.

Anyway it should clear up the parking spaces on Main Street leaving cars with keys in them and maybe a freezer full of steaks at Favas and cold beer at Galvins, assuming the owners can make the cut.

I'll be judging photos at a dog and sheep show and waiting the arrival of good friends, the Cooks, from Chicago. I doubt that they will be "Raptured", but if they are, I hope it's after their arrival and Bill leaves behind his keys.

They have a real cool car.

 

Kentucky Primary

The day was dark and gloomy.  And long.

The turnout was about 3 percent.

Excellent food was provided by workers at the courthouse.

My food intake was equivalent to preparing a bear for its winter hibernation.

And my check is in the mail.

On The Road Again

After a short respite spent buying and planting an assortment of flowers and herbs in my back garden  and finishing a New Yorker three weeks late, once again I got sucked into working on the exhibit.  Back to sending  out some more cards, going over the brochure that the gallery will offer and trying to mesh scans with Kathryn to add to our website.

Last summer I haphazardly scanned some Route 20 photos, thinking they would never be used and created a disorganized mess that I'm now trying to sort out.

Actually, I need an agent. Anyone interested?

Getting it Together

 The Carnegie Center  exhibit announcements are out. The photos are wrapped and ready to be delivered to the gallery in a couple of weeks. And the development of the website is a work in progess but a few things are posted--(www.accidentalhighway.com) as we frantically (me) thoughtfully and professionally (Kathryn and Karen) continue to develop it.

Time to stop. Volunteer a morning at the Horse Park. And enjoy the lovely orchid given to me by a younger male friend.

All Wrapped Up

Another major move for the exhibit behind me; numbered and wrapped the photos--easier said than done--and now must live with the invasion of bubble wrap, boxes and plastic bags for the next couple of weeks.

Did GO to a Derby Party--one held in the country for about 50 years running at a log cabin home with big yard and rolling farm land. However it was raining so even great food and drink didn't outweigh being contained inside with several dozen of Kentucky kin. Did a U-ee and opted for a beer and Galvins carryout on my deck.

There will always be another Kentucky Derby party.
